Le Passeur: Chapters 9-12 The Awakening of Jonas

SUMMARY

On chapters 9- 12 Jonas is troubled because he doesn't know his future assignment , the kind of pain that he will have to confront or why he has to be isolated from people while he is training.
Then when he opens the envelope with the instructions, he finds only 8 instructions and he is shocked because there are plenty of things that he was never able to do before. Jonas is now allowed to ask questions that were forbidden before and on the other hand, he isn't allowed to talk about his dreams or to talk to people about his training. But the rule that frightened Jonas the most is that he is allowed to lie now.

The next day he goes to the Anex to start his training, he goes with Fiona since the Anex is right behind the house of the old witch and actually is where Fiona now works. When he gets there he notices that there are locks on the door, this is something odd because nor his house or the other houses had locks. He enters and is greeted by a secretary, he goes through another set of doors and finds himself in a very luxurious room, he is amazed by all the of books that he finds in this room. Jonas then notices a bearded old man, the old man tells him that he is the receiver and that he will transmit all the memories from the past generations to him. Then the receiver gives him the memory of snow. Jonas is confused at first but then he understands that he is going downhill on a sled.

After that he is given the memory of sunshine and the memory of sunburn but before he leaves he asks the receiver what he should call him and he tells him, THE GIVER.

OPINIONS AND REACTIONS

In my opinion this community is intolerant because there is no place for mistakes, how are people supposed to learn if they have to get everything right at the first time. In this community there is only one person who has the memories of  joy and the seasons, I think this is selfish.  For example the pleasure of feeling and playing with the snow is taken from them even if it's cold and it does slow down the crop production but its fun to play in it .
But the thing that shocked me the most is that people are forbidden to have knowledge and are controlled, there is no perfect society when even you thoughts are controlled.
In conclusion, I think that the people would be happier and the community would be better if they let their citizens have the right to choose, and have the right to feel the joys of life and to have memories of good and bad things even if these causes them happiness or pain.
