The story Taste tells the tale of a man named Mike who usually brings a friend called Richard over for dinner, they usually bet that if Richard can guess the type of wine hes given, where its from and what company made it and Richard was always the winner ,one time Mike had gotten a wine that was like no other and he knew that Richard would never be able to guess it so Richard seeing how confident Mike was wanted to bet his two houses and Mike to bet his daughter in marriage. At first Mikes wife and his daughter were thinking of this as a crazy bet but then Mike assures them that Richard would never get this one.
Then both men make the bet, Mike givesRichard a cup of the wine and Richard guesses it right.
And when all seems like a big mess and that Mikes
daughter now had to marry Richard, the maid comes in and gives Richard his glasses back that he had left from the place where they store the wines when he went there by himself. And it didn't take a genius to figure out that in all this time Richard had always been cheating.
So in this story I think that the way the author ends it with the whole realization that Richard had always being cheating really makes us think on what the heck just happened, at first your all OK but then out of nowhere you read:
'You left them in Mr Schofield's study,. she said. Her voice was unnaturally, deliberately polite.'On top of the green filing cabinet in his study, sir, when you happened to go in there by yourself before dinner.' It took a few moments for the full meaning of her words to penetrate, and in the silence that followed I became aware of Mike and how he was slowly drawing himself up in his chair, and the color corning to his face, and the eyes opening wide, and the curl of the mouth, and the dangerous little patch of whiteness beginning to spread around the area of the nostrils.'Now, Michael' his wife said. 'Keep calm now, Michael, dear! Keep calm!'
Its all just so unexpected and it leaves you wondering on what just happened. Another thing I like is the imagery but more than the imagery i love how the author does everything to keep us on edge and with the feeling of wanting to read more.
Mike was not looking at anyone.Daddy!' the daughter cried, agonised. 'But, Daddy, you don't mean to say he's guessed it right! , 'Now, stop worrying, my dear,' Mike said. 'There's nothing to worry about.' I think it was more to get away from his family than anything else that Mike then turned to Richard Pratt and said, 'I’ll tell you what, Richard. I think you and I better slip off into the next room and have a little chat.' 'I don't want a little chat,' Pratt said. All I want is to see the label on that bottle.' He knew he was a winner now; he had the bearing, the quiet arrogance of a winner, and I could see that he was prepared to become thoroughly nasty if there was any trouble.
FINAL THOUGHTS AND OPINIONS
I really liked this story, it was fun to read and it always kept me on edge and up with what was happening, i also liked how it shows that cheating never gives you a positive outcome because for Mikes family they lost a lot of money and his daughter could have married a guy she didn't like one bit and for Richard it worked fora bit but in the end he lost 2 houses and possibly his friendship with Mike, this all comes to show us that every time, everywhere, the truth is always the one with the best outcome.
