The Taste of Deception

SUMMARY

The story Taste tells the tale of a man named Mike who usually brings a friend called Richard over for dinner, they usually bet that if Richard can guess the type of wine hes given, where its from and what company made it and Richard was always the winner ,one time Mike had gotten a wine that was like no other and he knew that Richard would never be able to guess it so Richard seeing how confident Mike was wanted to bet his two houses and Mike to bet his daughter in marriage. At first Mikes wife and his daughter were thinking of this as a crazy bet but then Mike assures them that Richard would never get this one.
Then both men make the bet, Mike gives
Richard a cup of the wine and Richard guesses it right.
And when all seems like a big mess and that Mikes
daughter now had to marry Richard, the maid comes in and gives Richard his glasses back that he had left from the place where they store the wines when he went there by himself. And it didn't take a genius to figure out that in all this time Richard had always been cheating.

So in this story I think that the way the author ends it with the whole realization that Richard had always being cheating really makes us think on what the heck just happened, at first your all OK but then out of nowhere you read:

'You left them in Mr Schofield's study,. she said. Her voice was unnaturally, deliberately polite.'On top of the green filing cabinet in his study, sir, when you happened to go in there by yourself before dinner.' It took a few moments for the full meaning of her words to penetrate, and in the silence that followed I became aware of Mike and how he was slowly drawing himself up in his chair, and the color corning to his face, and the eyes opening wide, and the curl of the mouth, and the dangerous little patch of whiteness beginning to spread around the area of the nostrils.'Now, Michael' his wife said. 'Keep calm now, Michael, dear! Keep calm!'

Its all just so unexpected and it leaves you wondering on what just happened. Another thing I like is the imagery but more than the imagery i love how the author does everything to keep us on edge and with the feeling of wanting to read more.

Mike was not looking at anyone.Daddy!' the daughter cried, agonised. 'But, Daddy, you don't mean to say he's guessed it right! , 'Now, stop worrying, my dear,' Mike said. 'There's nothing to worry about.' I think it was more to get away from his family than anything else that Mike then turned to Richard Pratt and said, 'I’ll tell you what, Richard. I think you and I better slip off into the next room and have a little chat.' 'I don't want a little chat,' Pratt said. All I want is to see the label on that bottle.' He knew he was a winner now; he had the bearing, the quiet arrogance of a winner, and I could see that he was prepared to become thoroughly nasty if there was any trouble.

FINAL THOUGHTS AND OPINIONS

I really liked this story, it was fun to read and it always kept me on edge and up with what was happening, i also liked how it shows that cheating never gives you a positive outcome because for Mikes family they lost a lot of money and his daughter could have married a guy she didn't like one bit and for Richard it worked for
a bit but in the end he lost 2 houses and possibly his friendship with Mike, this all comes to show us that every time, everywhere, the truth is always the one with the best outcome.

THAT THING WAS ONLY WORTH A HUNDRED FRANCS?!?!

SUMMARY

In the story the Necklace Mathilde loirel finds herself with an invitation to a fancy ball but she has nothing to wear so her husband gives her some money which she then proceeds to use to buy a dress then she asks one of her friends if she could lend her a necklace of some sort so her friend lends her a beautiful looking diamond necklace. Mathilde thanks her friend goes to the party and enjoys herself and haves fun but then its time to leave, when she gets home she notices there was something odd
, she feels like she forgot something and then realizes that THE NECKLACE WAS GONE!!! Her husband starts looking for it everywhere, but the necklace was nowhere to be found, Mathilde starts to panic and so she tells her friend she broke the chain and that she would go repair it, this earns her an extra week and so with a few couple thousand francs and a huge loan from the bank ,she is finally able to buy a diamond necklace similar to the one she lost. She gives that one to her friend but now
she had another problem, she had to pay off her
loan from the bank so after a few years of hard
work and labor she is finally able to pay off the
money she owed the bank. Then one day while
Mathilde is in the park she spots her friend and
decides to say hi, her friends panics by looking
at Mathilde all tired and exhausted, Mathilde tells her what happened with the necklace and how she spent years paying off the money she borrowed and then her friend feels guilty as she tells Mathilde that the necklace was a fake and it was only worth a couple hundred francs.

In this short story one of the things that I liked most of all was how the author gives us a strong look at imagery and how just by describing the characters we can easily picture them in our head:

"She was prettier than them all, elegant, gracious, smiling and crazy with joy... All the men looked at her, asked her name, endeavored to introduced.”

The short story was really interesting and i really liked the little twist in the end of how Mathilde had done all that hard work to pay of a necklace that was worth only a couple hundred bucks.

FINAL THOUGHTS AND REACTIONS

After reading the short story The Necklace I was left with a queer feeling, what in the world just happened? I though that that was kind of messed up because in my opinion I think that Mathildes friend who gave her the necklace should have told her first that the necklace was a fake and that if anything happened to it she shouldn't really worry about it, but, seeing as how she did not tell her, Mathilde ended up giving her a real one that cost way more than the original, and that made Mathilde all weary and tired because she spent five years paying off that thing, i mean FIVE YEARS OF ONLY HARD WORK WITHOUT A BREAK, that's got to leave some one tired for a good amount of time. But also another way Mathilde could have avoided pure hard work and labor was by being responsible, she should have been more careful with that necklace and she should have been paying attention to it and keeping an eye on it at all times because if she had kept it safe she could have just returned and lived happy without any kind of punishment.
